I've been meaning to replace the rotors as they have endured 4 brake jobs in the 115K that's on the truck. It just makes sense to me for $50 just to replace them instead of trying to resurface. In the process of rotor replacement a total front wheel bearing grease re packing was accomplished.

Yeah, before you gasp with concern about laying under the truck just know that it's sitting on a jack stand with a hydraulic jack as a backup. Then put the proper size regular socket over the Bolt Out socket and apply torque with a breaker bar. It's always great when a product does exactly what it says it will do. That bolt is a dealer item only and costs $10 to replace. Just a bit much for only one bolt, but a needed item to be able to fix the brakes and they know it.

Have a great day and don't forget to leave a comment

More

Today while reading one of the blogs I follow, the topic of New Year's resolutions was the entry of the day. We all know how New Year's resolutions go. We are gung ho for about a week or so then the enthusiasm wears off and the drudgery begins to invade and soon the resolutions are forgotten until next New Year's Day. This blog entry contends that a better thing would be to have a one word theme for the New Year. Things such as mindfulness, patience, me, dare, acceptance, trust, or shine were words that others had taken as their one work themes for the year. The author of the blog's word was BE. In the author's words, "It's all about me doing too much, and not taking time to just Be. Be available. Be Mum. Be still. Be calm. Be me." Mum is Queen's English for Mom. I think the author is Austrailian.

My word for this year's theme is MORE.

More spiritual contemplative prayer with reading and study.

More gardening. Those of you that have read my blogs know that I've expanded my garden and will be growing more vegetables, preserving more food, and giving away more stuff.

More completed projects. As you can see this area certainly needs a completed project. I've been thinking about it for a couple years but this year is time for some action. This alone would be a great accomplishment for the year.

More healthful cooking and eating. That would go along with the gardening. More exercising. More .... well you get the idea. It's just more.

Happy New Year to all. If you want, you can slip me a note with what you would like to change in your life for 2010.

Ode to tooth number 30

When hot, cold, chewing sensitivity became noticeable, I mentioned the fact that there might be an issue with tooth number 30 on the last teeth cleaning visit. Upon examination, my dentist declared that a root canal was needed to correct the issue. Yippee!! One of my favorite things. NOT.

The fateful hour arrived to begin the procedure. I readied my mind to what lay ahead. The dentist came with his big needle to numb the area to be worked on. The time came to drill out the roots of tooth number 30. With firmness set on his face the dentist began drilling through the crown to open up the roots. Parts of tooth were flying around inside my mouth and some even made into open air as they flew out my mouth and hit the napkin that lay pinned on my chest with the neck chain. The dentist drilled on and an oh so familiar burning tooth smell began wafting through my nostrils. Even though all this activity was going on there was no pain. Break through occurred about 1 minute after drilling began. The actual root canal procedure began with different sizes of instruments being used. After I think about five minutes, the dentist backed away and proclaimed that there was a shelf in the mesio-buccal canal that he couldn't get past and that he was referring me to specialist. So now I have a little gooey wad stuffed into the hole in the crown until January 15th which was the first opening the specialist had. Everything seems good with no pain expect when I forget to chew only on the left side. The soft little gooey wad doesn't hold up to well to chewing. It pushes down into the nerve under it and lets me know right away that I shouldn't have done that. Only three more visits to go.

I thank God for dentists and novocaine. I sure wouldn't be looking forward to a barber working on my teeth as it was in the wild west days.

If you want to hear about my root canal from a couple years ago, then click on the link below. It was quite an interesting visit for sure. By late summer it became quite the eyesore and definitely not appealing from the curb.

After a few days spent in the back breaking effort of removing all the 1965 stone wall and replacing it with nice retaining wall blocks, the improvement was wonderful. The removing of the entire flower garden weed patch came next and poor man's colored concrete squares imprinted to look like bricks was installed on top of a bed of sand. The finishing touch was the container flowers placed on the wall and the installation of an automatic watering system to make sure all containers got routinely watered.

Poor Man's Patio

Poor Man's Patio

Well folks, here's my journey through the poor man's patio. This is the ugly site of the Spring garden and my first attempt to cover up a no grass mud spot right by the front door. As you can see Spring is past and once again this area is a lovely weed patch that's a real eye catcher as one enters the front door. I finally decided that enough with this ugly mess and made plans to replace the whole front area with a poor man's patio.

Right about now I am wondering what in the world have I gotten myself into this time. Yeah, I kind a think it turned out pretty good too for a first time patio project. There's only one problem ............. all the neighbors now know that I have the knowledge and skills to install a patio. Oh well, I kind a think I'll be doing more of this stuff as time goes on with retirement. I always liked projects, but just didn't have the time. Now I got the time.

You might ask why do I call it a poor man's patio? Well, it's not real bricks. They are concrete 12 inch squares dyed and molded to look like bricks. The cost is a fraction of what real bricks would have cost. And so poor man's patio.

Still Looking for the perfect Retirement Home

Hey, I'm still in the hunting mode for a place to retire. This baby here has a wonderful water feature with a fishing porch right on the house. The surrounding landscape has that natural woodsie look. Now that's even better than the shack down by the river that I have told many to look for. I'd have to, of course, have a boat to go home at night. Getting a good internet connection may have some challenges, but all things can be overcome with the right technology. Right?

OK, now this one comes with a boat and a live cage for what ever comes out of the water. It looks like it wouldn't take much to keep it in good repair nor would it be difficult to find parts to repair problems that might pop up. I'd just have to look around and find something....anything..... and there you have it a good repair part.
So the quest for the perfect retirement home of my dreams continues as repairs on the present home move forward and excitment builds.

Old Dave's Retirement Thoughts and Home

Many have been wondering just when is Old Dave going to retire. I have given it much thought and first has to come major down sizing. I am in the process of sprucing up the old mansion to get top dollar on the market. House selling seems to be a little slow right now, so I'm not in a big hurry about the whole deal. Maybe a couple years or so depending on how fast I repair many things. You know the hole in the shower wall and the missing kitchen floor covering, and, of course, the sagging kitchen ceiling, the replacing of the tired and worn out sliding door in the dining room and then the complete refinishing of the basement.

The basement is quite a hoot. It appears the previous owner ordered up a keg and invited his friends over to finish the basement. There's some real interesting construction down there. The whole thing needs gutted and re done. That will be the biggest thing to do.

Outside there's the finishing of the house painting. It's been an ongoing project these last years. Yes I said years. I expect by the time I'm finished, it will need another coat. Twenty years of neglect has made for much scraping, sanding, priming, and painting that is if there is wood there. Caulking should be done around the windows and in some cases window replacement will need to be done as there isn't much casing to caulk around. Nothing but dead air. Nice.

I am looking for a much smaller place with less upkeep and very little yard maintenance. Most of my time would not be spent at home so primitive facilities would be quite OK. I really would like to hear the soothing trickle of a brook or a mellow rushing of a water fall.

I'm reminded of my Cousin's Great Uncle that they called Unc. I'm guessing it was short for Uncle. He lived in a log cabin with one room in the wonderful state of Minnesota. Trees are wonderful there. Tall pine trees with Birch sprinkled here and there. There's just something about walking on a carpet of pine needles and smelling the freshly squeezed aroma. Unc even had a door in the floor that led down to a cellar under the cabin where he stored his summer bounty from the garden. The inside of the cabin was well seasoned with the smell of smoke from the wood burner.

Unc had the most wonderful garden. Tall pole beans grew on six or seven foot poles lashed together in a threesome tripod. Every vegetable I could imagine was grown in this well cultivated and cared for garden plot. He lived a brisk five minute walk from White Fish lake that teemed with fish and other lake life. I have many awesome memories about Northern, Bass, and Sunfish caught from this lake. Unc had a way of smoking the fish in his smoker that makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Anyway back to the retirement. Trees are a must. The more the better. I love trees. City living makes me deal with leaves, but country leaves just fall and turn into good stuff for the smaller foliage. Pets are out because I plan on traveling but wild life could be the pets of the future. In my opinion they are best pets. There's no care involved just viewing enjoyment. I never was one to have a hairy beast in the house. However, many compromises are made when a wife and kids are involved. Trails of hair and smell endlessly waft through the furniture. Training young pets was always a joy. I have had my share of pets including rabbits, dogs, cats, pigs (Guinea), fish, and turtles. I'm enjoying the empty pet syndrome.

Be on the look out for Old Dave's retirement home. I'm sending you a picture so you will know it when you see it. Oh yeah, it doesn't get any better than that. Well, unless it could be a motor home. Umm, that's a whole other story and thought.

So you be sure to be on the look out for Old Dave dream home and I'll catch up with you in the next e-mail.

David

Dishwasher Dave

This story started a couple weeks ago and as with any of my projects turn into a real story.

It all started with me delving heavy into the deep dark depths of plumbing repair under the kitchen sink. Who knows what lives under there. I was washing dishes this last week when suddenly my socks began to feel quite soggy. Pulling the doors under the sink open, I found a dripping coming from the plumbing. With parts and wrenches in hand I dove into the unknown territory with vigor. About an hour later success ruled.
The floor of the cabinet was, however, another issue. It appears that the floor has had issues for some time and was covered with ........... (big sigh) contact paper. On top of linoleum. On top of an extra layer of cabinet flooring. Quite a mess actually. It needed to be removed in its entirety. I'm really excited about what interesting things will be found as I repair the cabinet floor. The best is yet to come. I fired up the dishwasher to test the connection to the plumbing and to my disappointment water began to flow from under the washer.
The good news is that I am forced to deal with cleaning out under the sink. I found things I hadn't seen in.........ah well some I don't think I've ever seen. Sadly the dishwasher pump has pumped its last puddle on the floor. Of course the repair parts are 3/4 the price of a new washer, so the hunt is on for a new plate cleaner. Hunting is what guys do best. We are designed to be foragers, but instead of roaming forests and rivers, we now frequent the aisles of Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart providing for our households from foreign countries in the modern American way.

Old Dave does his best work while laying down
This week again of course was spent wrestling with the dishwasher issue. I discovered not only was there a leak in the plumbing under the sink and the dishwasher pump, but a previous owner decided it best to splice in a section of tubing to reach the water supply line instead of replacing the entire line. Well in my projects the rule is if it can it does. Yes, indeed another leak. this project has taken on a life of it's own as is the case with all projects I touch. I finally got the word from Home Depot that the dish scrubber had arrived and when was I picking up the package. I said that I would be right over and jumped into my trusty steed and sped out of the neighborhood with visions of finally a clean kitchen on the horizon. After bringing the package home I set out to cut the cardboard protection away from the outside. Now the purpose of waiting an entire week and not just taking the black washer off the floor was I wanted a white one to match the refrigerator and someday stove. But as I cut away the covering what did I spy................BLACK. I could have gotten that a week ago. Oh well, maybe the next owner will be one that loves black cause I'm not taking it back. Dishes are piling up don't you know.

Ya just never know what will happen when ya touch 40 year old plumbin'

Now the task is installation. So with a drain hose, a water line, a electric cord, and tools I twisted and fastened the parts on to the new washer. The time came to light up all the different sections of the washer. Smoke test for the electric ......... no smoke when plugged in as those that know me is a good thing. Drain hose fastened and tight is good. Water valve turning turning turning on ........ good to go. But wait dripping. There's not supposed to be dripping from the shut off valve. Turning off no dripping. Turning on......drip...............drip...............drip. (Big sigh) Oh not again. That's another story. So it's off with the water to the dishwasher and a call into the plumber. I'd tackle the task but I and copper pipe with solder fittings have this battle going on and well the pipes seem to win more than not. I just don't have the time to fight this battle right now so in with the experts and out with the ego (mine). And the saga continues.Today finally success. So rest assured that the ole pot scrubber is nestled into it's proper space and is sloshing along just as it's supposed to. I just love it when a project comes to a close with success and no injuries.

Grunt Groan. That's workin' the back

And the saga continues.Today finally success. So rest assured that the ole pot scrubber is nestled into it's proper space and is sloshing along just as it's supposed to with a wonderfully dry floor. I just love it when a project comes to a close with success and no injuries.

Almost there. Only one flight of stairs and two door ways.

So that's it. One dishwasher install well done. Well, it's done anyhow.

Let me see what's next. Oh yeah, up on the roof and gutter cleanup. Is that trees growing up there. Maybe I waited just wee bit too long to clean out the water redirecters.

Old Dave and the prettiest girl in the world

The question is can you remember when Old Dave looked like this? Actually I had to clean up a bit to get married. Shave and a hair cut. I know it's hard to believe old Dave was a hippie, but it's true. I cut off a couple inches from the hair but it was still shoulder length and trimmed up the beard considerably to marry the prettiest girl in town. What she saw in me I'll never know but she truly was my soul mate for 23 years. St. Timothy's church, the round church not far from 90th and Dodge was where the wedding was with all the family and friends. Maybe a hundred or so. Dave and Sherry, my older kids, were 6 and 7 years old and were of course in the wedding.
We lived at 57th and Read until 1985 when we moved to the present location of 96th and Ruggles. We had adopted Lydia by then and she turned 1 year old soon after we moved. Dave and Sherry were now 14 & 15. We picked up a dog along the way and now we were a complete American family.

As most of you know Dottie was plagued with medical problems because of the heart defect she had at birth. For many years we danced in and out of hospitals with mostly respiratory problems but occasionally there was a congestive heart failure problem and digestive issues sprinkled in here and there. During our first year of marriage she was in the hospital 7 times each a week long. After a couple years her doctors found the plan and Dottie lived many years hospital free.

The problem with her heart caused a problem with low level of oxygen in her blood through out her life time and it finally caught up with her through deterioration of the lungs and digestive system as well as most of the other organs. Finally they just couldn't sustain life any longer and she actually died from respiratory failure.

Anyway I'm not sure why I'm going in this direction except to let people know that I'm doing fine and it is well with my soul. Mostly I just wanted to show those that I have promised the picture that proves old Dave really did have hair once.

Remember life is just adventures between prayer times.

Old Dave

Lucy Lives

This week Lucy (my computer) was connected to the fast DSL (fast internet connection). Are you climbing ladders and doing hand springs yet? Just kidding. I pray that you are healing quickly with no complications. So far I have not broken any bones. That's a miracle for sure. I have fallen and banged into things all my life, but never have broken anything. I have had so many stitches that I have lost count.

It all started at age 5 with a buzz saw. A buzz saw was what farm people used to cut up wood for the heating stove in the house. It was a huge saw blade with no shielding around it. When it was used, a tractor was connected to the saw by using a wide belt from the saw to a special power belt pulley on the tractor. This saw was setting unused with nothing connected to it. I was playing with the saw by turning the big blade by hand and pretending to cut wood. Upon on bending over to pick up a piece of wood from the ground while the blade was spinning, I ran the saw into my head. Gashed it open pretty good. I, of course, ran to the house with blood running down my face and soaking into my shirt. My mother opened the screen door to see what the commotion was and went white as a sheet. After regaining her composure, we made the quickest trip to town I ever saw. Old Doc Huges was there with needle and thread to stitch up the gaping hole in my head. Actually it had just cut the skin and wasn't all that critical. I carried a manly scar for many years after that.

Thomas, I have jumped out of trees and leaped from the top of farm storage sheds with wild abandon into high weed patches. I’ve climbed so high is trees the branches barely supported me. I’ve fallen down freshly dug outside toilet holes and fallen into 55 gallon barrels of oil and fallen off fences backwards into huge hog mud holes. My love affair with machines started with my first bicycle. I defied my parents wisdom and gave my sister a ride on the bar and ended up doing a forward midair summersault by when my sister accidentally put her foot in the spokes of the front tire. We both flew up and over a bush landing in a neighbors yard. Fortunately we had double guardian Angels with that time. I rode my dirt bike up the sides of 100 foot straight up hills, hit a barbed wire fence straight on with my dirt bike, stuck the front wheel of my dirt bike into an open barrel laying on its side. Both times I rolled up over the object I hit and came up with not a scratch. I’ve ridden in cars at speeds in excess of 130 MPH on the open highway, done street racing with my old ‘58 Ford 300 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine. What the new Chevy owners with there flashy 265 and 283 Cubic Inch V-8s didn’t know was that I had more cubic inches than they did and that 6 cylinders have much more punch off the line. Sure made a lot of Chevy owners humble back in those days. So you see Thomas I kept my guardian Angels extremely busy because God had a plan for me and He kept me safe through all those dumb times in my life. Thomas, God has a plan and a purpose for you as well. Seek Him out and He most assuredly will reveal it to you.

I finally got my fast Internet working. I've had it for a couple weeks, but just couldn't get it working. My old computer "Sweetie" died some time back and I had to acquire a new computer. I have been on a search for a new name for the daughter of "Sweetie". I say daughter because when she says," Good morning David" when I power her up. it still sounds like her Mom Sweetie. Well, the search is over. I am somewhat of a Science Fiction movie fan and was watching a movie on TV last weekend call "Mars". It was about a expedition to Mars. The name of the computer for the mother ship was Lucille. It just kind of fit, so the name of daughter of Sweetie is Lucy. Some people think I'm a little weird naming my truck "Ranger Rick" and my snow blower "Stormie" and my computer "Lucy", but it's just a fun thing I do and not to worry. So anyway Lucy, God bless her heart (mother chip), did not want to talk to others on the internet. She must have heard about the dangers of young girls talking to others on the Internet. I and a tech support person gently convinced Lucy that we had protected her in every way and it was ok to venture out into the scary world wide web.

Thomas, you heal up fast ya hear. The next time I see you we will have some sharing to do.

Blessings.

David (WWD)

Zucchini Culinary Arts

Last week upon returning home I found a surprise resting on my doorstep. A wonderful package of 4 Zucchini. Knowing that I would not be able to use it all I began the process of trying to pass on the blessing to others. I have given away two of the succulent veggies and am in process of looking for a home for the third. One will surely be enough for me. Ok then let's get started.

First things first. What will the tasty squash become. I settled on a recipe make up a casserole and some spaghetti sauce. The first order is to slice and dice the zucchini. It's a tough job, but I am determined to get the job done. I mean after all it's just a squash.

Next I need to chop up a onion or two. This ought to be much easier than chopping up the zucchini. It's smaller and I have a big sharp knife. So let's get started. Chop Chop.

My eyes. My eyes. They're burning and I can't see too good. Oooo, I hope that was an onion I chopped. I feel no pain so it must have been an onion.

Oh yeah, perfection. On the left is spaghetti casserole with zucchini sauce. On the right is the zucchini casserole. I think this culinary project is finished. So when you have cooking to do with zucchini involved call on old culinary Dave. Stand back and watch those whirling knives and flying spices. It's a marvel to watch old Dave in the kitchen. Well, if you survive.

Death of a Computer

As most of you know I like name things that I use in my life. I have a truck named "Ranger Rick", a snowblower named "Stormie", and and computer named "Sweetie". I call her Sweetie because when I power her up she talks to me in a female voice with, "Good morning David" or "Goodbye David" when I shut her off.

Sweetie died this last week. I just found her unresponsive one morning. I tried to revive her by putting in a new power supply, but alas it seemed that she had computed her last bit. I sped down to Best Buy with her clutched in my arms hoping that the Geek Squad would be able to bring her back to life, but the head geek told me her mother board was fried beyond repair. So with a tear in my eye I gathered up all my strength and made my way back to the bright and shiny new machines. I came home with a Compaq 3.4 Gigahertz machine that has 512 MB of RAM and 160 MB of hard drive memory. I carefully removed Sweetie's brain, hard drive, from her tower and took it to Best Buy to hopefully be recovered.

Today I have good news. Sweetie's memory in still in tact and lives on. I have purchased a new external case to house Sweetie's memory and have plugged her memory into the new computer through a USB port.

The new machine doesn't have a name yet. She does have her mother's voice so I guess she would be the daughter of Sweetie. The new computer is a spooky machine. It's so quick and has a very defiant attitude. It took three days to get all that power under control. I still feel like it's having a wild animal in captivity that's always right on the edge of being out of control. Sweetie was kinder gentler machine, but there are some advantages with daughter of Sweetie. She has media ports for memory sticks from cameras. I put my memory from my digial camera in the memory port and up pops a screen with the words, "What folder do you want the pictures copied to". It doesn't get any easier than that. With Sweetie I had to hook up a cable from the camera to her USB port and point and clink my way through software levels to finally get the pictures copied to the hard drive. So it's a mixed emotion about Sweetie and daughter of Sweetie.

Root Cannels are alien implants

Today was the second of three visits for a root cannal. Two weeks later, which is today, was break the seal and scoop out the medicated goop and clean out the cannals to get the roots ready for filling with stuff.

Everything was going real good. The mouth and gum was numb. All the dental garb was on. Now days to have teeth looked at, eye protection must be worn, a dribble scarf must be chained around the neck, and now TV and headphones are optional. Can you imagine. TV while teeth are yanked. Cable TV with remote no less. With the drill whiring away and the tooth cannals being cleaned a strange look came across the dentist's face like, "I can't believe that just happened" kind of look. He continued with what he was doing for a spell and jumped up and said to his assistant, "Go get a X-Ray of that will you." So I amble over to the X-Ray machine with the glasses and dribble scarf still on. I plunk down in the chair and wait for the X-Ray flack jacket to get flung over my chest and the hardware stuck in my mouth. It always amazes me that when they take X-Rays they are concerned about covering the chest, but who cares lets fry the brain. You ever wonder about that?

OK now the X-Ray's done and I'm back in the dental recliner with sleep on my mind as I've been up all night working and it's nearing 12:30 pm, when up stroles the dentist and says, "We've got a problem." That's really what you want to hear when you're sitting in the dentist chair all numbed up half way through a root cannal isn't it? So I roll my eyes and say, "OK what is it."

The dentist hesitates a few moments trying to find the right words, which is never a good sign, and says, "One of my instruments broke off in you're cannal." I'm thinking well get your instument out of my cannal, but I said, "So now what?"

He says, "Well, ah, we are going to just leave it there and seal it up with cannal filler."

Right away I grasp the situation and understand that digging around in my cannal trying to root out (pun intended) a piece of broken drill bit would probably cause considerable carnage in the mouth. So that's what we did. We buried the bit in the cannal with cannal filler.

Of course I think it's all a conspiricy to put an alien implant in my tooth and I truly expect to be abducted any day now. So if I come up missing, call the the X-Files and get Mulder and Sully on my trail will ya.

In the beginning there was BLOG and it was good

Well, here I am doing what I never thought I would be doing. I'm creating a BLOG. It took many people to continuously encourage me to get up into the current century. It's going to be a learning process so please bear with me.

Together we will journey though life with all the wonder and laughs of what life brings. I can't guarantee how often I'll be making entries cause most of the time I'll be getting in trouble with the adventures of life.

As my e-mail lists have grown, the free sites are complaining that I fringe on being a spammer. Imagine that. So to attempt to manage the volume of e-mail in and out of my tired old Juno account I have come dragging my feet into the BLOGing world.

Any suggestions about improvement will be greatly appreciated and probably ignored.

And so here we go on life's adventure together
